Cavalcade of Customs 2016

It is time to start a new year of car shows. The 2016 Cavalcade of Customs in Cincinnati kicked off the season. For a lot of people that starts in the spring but with the inside shows it keeps us Northern States car guys engaged through the winter months.

This years’ Cavalcade of Customs in Cincinnati was a big success.

There were all segments of the collector car hobby represented. We had the high end customs, drag cars, rat rods, hot rods, and custom trucks. We also had the some cool things that will always enhance a car show.

The show had builders with their cars on display, pin up girl contest, beard contest, and lots of vending booths with tools and car accessories.

It feels great starting off the new year with this type of show. We teamed up with our partners Classic Auto Insurance Agency. Ami G was on display.

The Build – Installing new seat covers

As Rick Drewry, Sr Claims Specialist at American Modern, prepares to install the new covers onto the ’65 Chevy Malibu restomod, there’s only a few things that they are required to do before installation.

First, they will take a premade rod, and slide it directly into place. Then, the back part of the seat is a little easier. The back part fits over the back bracket, where it should be, then you’ll locate the rod, and tuck it in between the cushion. Then you’ll take a set of hog ring pliers, clamp around the hog ring, and squeeze.

Make sure that the clamp is securely fastened by tugging on the cloth. The next step is to pull the cloth out and over the foam. This process will be a tedious process, so make sure you are thorough before turning it over to clamp underneath.

After stretching the fabric over the pivots for the upper part of the seat, you’ll need to make sure the top is fastened first. Then, pull it over, mark where the pivots are for future cutting. After this, stretch the seat cover over the frame.

When doing the other half of the seat cover, turn it inside out in order to install the hog rings into the seam to give it that fit. If you do not do this, it lays out over the foam giving you an unnecessary air pocket. Another tip to have a nice form-fitting seat, is to leave it out in the sun or warm them up, they will become a little bit easier to maneuver.

Make sure to clamp the hog ring to the bar that is outside the material to fasten it, then onto the frame of the seat. Now that the bottom half is fastened, you can focus on aligning the top half. When you hog ring it into the edge of the seat, the rod will make it nice and tucked in.

After installing the hog rings to the sides to seal the cover, the side trim is installed. Locate the mounting holes with the screws, then screw it to the seat. Attach the top part of the seat to the bottom, and finally it’s ready to be put back in the car.

Ami G – A Backdrop for the Network News

I could not have predicted what would happen at the 2015 Car Craft Summer Nationals.

After driving from Cincinnati to Milwaukee, I was backing the American Modern trailer into a spot at the hotel where I would be staying. Right after I parked, a woman came over to talk to me about our 1965 Chevy Malibu restomod – Ami G. She introduced herself as the head of event promotions for Car Craft Magazine.

“You are going to think I am crazy,” she said, “but I would like to have your car on 3 different local news channels tomorrow to help promote the Car Craft Summer Nationals.” Obviously I didn’t think she was crazy at all, and thought it would be great for people to see the car that makes us all so proud. And along with that, promote the car show we were attending.

Our first stop was at the main entrance of the Wisconsin State Fair grounds. That is where Milwaukee’s ABC and NBC news did their features – talking about the upcoming show and interviewing John McGann (Editor for Car Craft Magazine) while Ami G sat contently in the background.

Once the feature was completed, the sun began to rise. I loaded up Ami G. and drove half an hour to the Milwaukee Fox News Station. I unloaded Ami G. and Fox began to interview John McGann about the Car Craft Summer Nationals show and Ami G.

In summary, Ami G. made a grand appearance in Milwaukee! From the countless number of people that recognized her at the show proclaiming “That’s the car I saw on TV,” I would say she made her appearance well-known!

Car Craft Summer Nationals

The Car Craft Summer Nationals in Milwaukee turned out to be a great event with thousands of cool classic cars, great people that love to hot rod their rides, and love the collector car hobby! What more could you ask for!

If you aren’t familiar with Ami G.’s story you can view her video series here.

AARP Convention

Miami was a great experience! Not just because it’s Florida, but because of all the cool people I met too. From event coordinators and workers laying carpet and running electricity to the AARP members, we were all instant friends.

Ami G. worked her magic and made those friendships come to fruition. She inspired AARP Convention attendees to start working on that old car that’s been sitting in their garage for years. And she brought back great memories of the cars they use to have.

Whether you’re a car person or not, there’s no denying that classic cars and their stories bring people together. I heard many great tales during this awesome event. One guy I met, Richard, was a GM Autobody Tech for 40 years and remembers vividly working on the old Chevelles, like Ami G.

So what was my single most important lesson from the trip? No matter how much times change, America’s passion for classic cars will continue to unite us.

Sharonville Car Show 2015

It was a perfect Sunday. There was lots of sunshine and it hovered around 60 degrees all day.

For those of us in Cincinnati, the Sharonville Car Show, kicks off the car show season. It includes:

• several hundred cars,
• a swap meet area
• food vendors
• great songs playing from the 50’s and 60’s

This show kicked off the season for Ami G., too. The trailer’s new full vinyl wrap was the perfect backdrop for her and the American Modern Insurance Group booth.

A lot went into designing the trailer. We wanted it to be an attention grabber. Judging from the reaction of people, we accomplished that! It’s going to be hard to miss, with life-sized side views of Ami G. on each side. You will even be able to spot her going down the highway in the opposite direction. The back is a great rear view of Ami G., and the front shows her with some of the people who had a hand in bringing her back to life.

Ami G. will be traveling all around the country in her new trailer. Keep an eye out, you just might see her heading down the road.

World of Wheels – Indianapolis 2015

We just wrapped up a great show, the World of Wheels in Indianapolis, where we worked with our partners at Classic Auto Insurance.

Classic Ford Mustang

Like most of the indoor shows over the winter, it gives car guys like us an outlet and provides a temporary fix until spring comes bouncing back.

Classic Chevy Corvette

World of Wheels showcased a lot of high-end customs, where the workmanship was simply exceptional. It was easy to be impressed with the cars that were on display. To complement, we also had the hardcore hot rodders with their gassers, hot rods, and customs. These guys love their cars and live for the hobby.

One thing is for sure, everyone who brought their car to the show (and every spectator) shares that same love for classic cars.

Ami G. received her share of attention too. Seeing the story of her rebuild brought smiles to many faces. We loved being part of the show and the people we met were great!
